A POST AT WOODHAM WALTER

Then and Now

Photo by Jim Young.  1 January 2000.

At first glance the guidepost at the junction of Old London Road and Curling Tye Lane appears to be a good example manufactured by Maldon Iron Works.  However, on closer inspection there are several clues to show that not all is original.  The WOODHAM WALTER / DANBURY / CHELMSFORD arm was cast by Progress Foundry Ltd whose makers mark is visible between CHELMSFORD and 8.  The other two arms (replacements) have no makers mark.

Looking very sorry in January 2000.  The replacement arm of unknown date, although rusty, is till intact.  The other two arms are broken and beyond repair.  They may be original although no makers mark can be seen.

And here is what can be achieved by a local authority that cares about its heritage.  The detail below shows the rounded corners of the original Progress Foundry arm that distinguishes it from a Maldon Iron Works that have square corners.  One small criticism concerns the painting style of the post.  The black and white banding should be equal in height.  But such remarks are probably unjustified and the error can be rectified next time it is painted.
